Surface finishing processes for different requirements
Aurolia offers a range of processes for the targeted finishing of technical surfaces. Depending on the material, component and application, properties such as corrosion protection, wear resistance, electrical characteristics, dimensional accuracy and further processing can be specifically influenced. The functional requirements of your component determine which surface treatment is best suited to your application.
Silver Plating
Functional silver coatings for electrical and technical applications
Description
Silver plating is an electroplating process used to apply a functional silver coating to metal components. Silver is characterised in particular by its very high electrical conductivity and is therefore suitable for technically demanding applications where reliable electrical contact is essential.
A silver coating makes it possible to specifically modify the surface properties of a component without manufacturing the entire component from a correspondingly high-value material.
Typical applications can be found particularly in electrical engineering, electronics and contact technology. Electrical contacts, contact surfaces and other current-carrying components can be optimised for their intended function using an appropriate silver coating.
Aurolia adapts the coating process to the base material, component geometry and required functional properties. This allows the surface to be specifically tailored to the respective technical application.

Typical applications
Silver coatings are particularly suitable for applications where electrical power needs to be transmitted reliably or where high-quality electrical contact is required.
Typical applications can be found in electrical engineering and electronics, electrical contacts and connectors, as well as current-carrying components and technical parts with high requirements for electrical conductivity.
The appropriate silver coating for a component depends on factors including the base material, component geometry, subsequent operating conditions and the electrical and functional requirements.
FAQ – Silver Plating
What is electroplated silver plating?
In electroplated silver plating, an electric current is used to deposit a metallic silver layer onto an electrically conductive component. This gives the component a surface with very high electrical and thermal conductivity. The coating system is adapted to the base material and the required function.
Why are electrical contacts silver-plated?
Silver has very high electrical conductivity and, with a suitable contact design, enables low contact resistance. Silver-plated surfaces are therefore frequently used for high-current contacts and electrical connection surfaces. In addition to the coating, contact force, surface condition, and operating conditions are decisive for reliable performance.
Which materials can be silver-plated?
Various metallic base materials can be electroplated with silver.
Copper and copper alloys are particularly commonly coated. Depending on the base material, suitable pretreatments and intermediate layers may be required.
The complete coating system should therefore always be adapted to the base material and the subsequent application.
How thick is an electroplated silver coating?
The required coating thickness depends on the specific application.
Key factors include:
- electrical load
- mechanical stress
- type of contact
- base material
- required service life
- environmental conditions
Therefore, there is no single optimal silver coating thickness for all applications.
The required coating thickness depends on the type of contact, the mechanical and electrical load, the environmental conditions, and the required service life. There is therefore no uniform coating thickness suitable for all applications. The required minimum coating thickness and the relevant measurement areas should be specified in the technical drawing or coating specification.
Is silver electrically conductive?
Yes. Silver has excellent electrical properties and is therefore one of the preferred coating materials for high-performance electrical contacts.
Especially in high-current applications, a silver coating can provide significant functional advantages.
Can silver tarnish?
Yes. Silver can react with sulfur-containing substances in the environment, forming dark tarnish layers. Whether these impair functionality depends on the application and the contact conditions. If necessary, suitable anti-tarnish protection can be applied. This must be compatible with the electrical contact function and any subsequent soldering processes.
Can silver-plated components be soldered?
Why is nickel sometimes applied beneath silver?
A nickel layer can perform various functions in certain coating systems.
For example, it can serve as a diffusion barrier between the base material and the silver coating while also providing a defined substrate for the subsequent silver plating.
Whether such an intermediate layer is required depends on the base material and the subsequent application.
